Fullerene-C60 USES

1. Lubricating material

Fullerenes have a special spherical shape, which is the closest of all molecules to a ball, like a ball in a bearing, so it has been proposed to use as a “molecular ball” for lubrication; In addition, at the molecular level, individual fullerenes are extremely hard, and this spheroid structure gives them special stability, which makes fullerenes the main functional material for advanced lubrication.

2. Composite materials

Nanotechnology is also commonly used in badminton rackets and tennis rackets. Using the unique properties of fullerenes that can be highly bonded to carbon fiber, 0.7nm fullerenes and 7μm carbon fiber were combined in the manufacture of tennis rackets. This nanotechnology makes the racket with high stability, but also increased hardness, and has a high rebound, so that the ball energy is maximum return.

3. Photosensitive materials

Fullerene’s special ball-cage structure makes it particularly easy to absorb electrons, while maintaining stability, so it can be used as an electron acceptor material for organic solar cells to make photosensitive electronic devices.

4. Superconducting materials

Fullerenes are superconductors, which have relatively high critical temperatures, not only higher than previously discovered metal and alloy superconductors, but also far higher than all organic molecular superconductors.

5. Optical materials

Fullerene molecules do not have carbon-hydrogen (C-H bond) and carbon-oxygen (C-O bond) that interfere with nonlinear optical properties. Some fullerene molecular derivatives also have chiral properties, which are more superior than other nonlinear optical materials. They are high-performance photoconductors, photoluminescent materials, nonlinear optical materials, etc. This makes fullerenes and their derivatives have great applications in printing, optical computers, optical limiter and optical communication.

6. Catalytic materials

The special structure of fullerene makes it an important carrier material for catalysts.

7. Biomedical materials

Most existing medical technologies detect disease first and then treat it. Nanomedicine technology, which is currently being developed, can be treated at the same time as detection, achieving integrated diagnosis and treatment. At the same time, combined with accurate targeted therapy and individualized therapy, it can greatly shorten the time of disease cure, reduce toxic side effects, and reduce medical costs.

8. Cosmetics

Due to the special cage structure of fullerene, it can be very good affinity to free radicals, can play a role in activating skin cells, and because of this, fullerene has been used as a cosmetic raw material since the 21st century.
